What motivates people to volunteer work?

The fact is the world depends on volunteers. Volunteers often go where others fears to go-into disease-filled homes, crime infested neighborhoods or war torm regions. The bottom line is, with the economic conditions in a lot of countries, government just cannot do it alone.
Volunteers oftentimes forget the power they have. Since these volunteers are not being compensated, people normally do not question their motives and sincerity serve as inspiration to many others. Community service organizations played a major role in making their community a better place to live. Volunteers are happier and healthier than the rest of the community. They have higher self-esteem and confidence levels. Companies that encourage employees to volunteer often find their community relations and employee satisfaction levels improved significantly.Students who volunteer in high school and college have on average better grades, even though they spend significant time away from thier studies.Sociologists note that volunteering is truly a wonderful thing. If there were more of it, life would be better.
What volunteering does is to create community bonds, which combat crime and loneliness, and bring back the values of extended families. There's a saying "it takes a village to raise a child.” Volunteering helps create that village.
There was once a man who was recovering from alcoholism and other problems. He decided to do volunteer work at his church. The man was extremely talented and through his work, grateful co-volunteer soon regularly complimented him on his abilities. The former alcoholic became a transformed man. He got a better grip of himself and was later elected as community leader.
